The Japanese Garden in Hasselt is the largest garden of its kind in Europe. Flowing water, rocks, koi and carefully selected plants immerse visitors in the tranquillity of Japanese garden design.
The Japanese Garden grew out of the friendship between Hasselt and its Japanese twin city, Itami, and opened in 1992. Across approximately 2.5 hectares, water, stones, plants and architecture come together to form a harmonious landscape.
Stroll past ponds and waterfalls, watch the koi and discover the ceremonial tea house, the Peace Bell and traditional garden features. Activities focusing on Japanese traditions, nature and culture take place throughout the year. The garden opens seasonally, so check the opening days, tickets and visitor guidelines before your visit.
The Japanese Garden is directly adjacent to Kapermolenpark, making it easy to combine a garden visit with a relaxing picnic in the park. Alternatively, walk towards the city centre to visit Het Stadsmus or Grote Markt Hasselt.
