Antwerp Zuidpark wins Green Cities Europe Award

The Green Cities Europe Award is presented annually to outstanding green projects in European cities. Q-Park’s Kooldok Mobility Hub and Steendok parking facilities played a key role in the winning project.

Antwerp Zuidpark honoured with European award

Antwerp’s Zuidpark has won the prestigious Green Cities Europe Award 2025 (GCEA). Last year this project won the Flemish Public Space prize and was frequently commended internationally as an inspiring example of urban greening. We at Q-Park are delighted with this, because our Steendok and Kooldok Mobility Hub parking facilities play a significant role here.

From car park to city park

Zuidpark achieved high scores for the GCEA 2025 criteria: greenery quality, design, environmental impact, innovation and reproducibility. Moving parked cars underground particularly impressed the jury. The jury report mentions: “Moving the car park underground reclaimed valuable above-ground space for people and public activities as well as greenery.”

Instead of the rows and rows of cars parked on top of the old Zuiderdokken site Antwerp now has a large green park – right in the middle of the city. The project has also restored the site’s historic dock structure. The original dock walls are visible again inside the parking facilities, and icons representing Antwerp’s history identify each parking level.

Ken Casier, Antwerp City Councillor for Public Space and Greenery, said how proud he is with this recognition and reiterated it once again in this article on VRT NWS, a sentiment we at Q-Park fully echo.

A mobility partner with impact

As Sustainable Mobility Partner to the city of Antwerp – and many other European cities – we have been working closely with the City Council and helping with their mobility plans. After all, at Q-Park we believe you should not only include moving vehicles, but also consider parked vehicles as an integral part of your mobility strategy. That is exactly what Antwerp has done here, and with excellent results.

Q-Park Kooldok as sustainable mobility hub

Antwerp and Q-Park did more than just move the parked cars. Q-Park Kooldok has also become a sustainable Mobility Hub, which means that besides parking cars, the parking facility offers a range of additional services such as EV charging points, bicycle parking and shared bicycles.

In addition, Kooldok and Steendok were planned and located so that Q-Park transforms search traffic into destination traffic, thus improving traffic flow and city centre accessibility. This is how we create liveable and lively cities.
